Profile - Aaron Lengyel, CAN

at Yukon Jack 1996.

aaronlengyel02
Aaron toprolling Tony Senger.

Country
  Canada.
Weight
  80 kg.
Toughest opponent
There are several, but for me the best long matches I would have to say came from my friend from USA, Kevin Bongard. He and I always seem to lockup and we know it is going to be a fight. He is one of the best 180-185 lbs in the world left or right hand in my opinion.
Toughest match
Against one of my mentors Tony Senger. I admire him so much that it almost hurts for me to compete against him. Many times I have placed ahead of him in a venue. But rarely being able to defeat him. My toughest however is one that stands out in my mind was when I was 15 years old. I competed against my brother Dion, in a local venue, At the time Dion was three times consective Canadian National Champion. He started me in armwrestling. We played this game. He allowed me to beat him so I would stay on the A side undefeated, and he would come back to the finals on the B side. In the round robin match, I never tried - he just pinned me. After the match he encouraged me to pull my hardest. Also my girlfriend at that time gave me very powerful words of encouragement. She told me she believed I could win the match by endurance, as long as never lost off the start. As it turned out we set up for the tye breaker for the gold.

I loaded as hard as I could to stop my brothers blast. He hit hard, close to the pin but not down. The referee told us to keep pulling. Dion hit another, this time to finish the match and I stopped him dead in his tracks. At this time the croud was screaming. We pulled for almost 3 minutes and I eventually came back from the losing side of the table with a shoulderpress move to win the gold. To this day it without a dought would be one of my best pulls. Because what it took to beat that type of a puller.
Sometimes when you flash someone that is known Champion, it is because they where not ready. But to come back, and not giving up when all seems lost, is really what it takes to become a champion. I have heard that the victory happens before the match has begun. I think this is true for most sports.
Please tell us about your best tournaments
Some of me could be determined as results versus how I felt about how I did in the venue. Not always meant the same thing to me. The time I can tell you that I felt the best is when I represented Canada at international venues. For example when I won the Worlds in the left hand 80 kg in Petaluma, I had to defeat a Canadian Bernay Lemay, who I lived and practiced with for years. As it turned out Canada placed first, second and third. Another time was in Russia Moscow Golden Bear. When Bernie defeated me to go on to win the Golden Bear in 1995. My best competition was when I won the Canadians right and left handed for the 90 kg catagory in 1996.
How many tournaments have you won?
I am sorry if I get the numbers wrong because throughout the years I picked up lots of trophies mostly top three. Since I used to compete in 3 - 5 weight classes typically I would usually do well, but it hurt my chances of winning golds. I never really cared about winning as much as I liked just to pull everybody. Sometimes winning a gold was a result of pulling everyone. To my last attempt to count trophies, I have achieved 350 or more trophies. Probably one third are golds, and the rest seconds and thirds.
Best training advice
Armwrestling is a craft. Strength against strength can be used to win matches. But having enough experience to deliver the right techniques against various types of pullers will help improve your chances in bigger venues. This comes from training on a table. (table time) Most importantly train without injuries. Pull with intensity but train at a slower pace than in competitions. Give yourself enough time to heal from pains caused from armwrestling. Have fun, do your best at your skills naturally. Learn from your experiences. Try to be overall in good shape, hand, arms etc. In addition learn to be good at all the main techniques - top roll, hook, 1/2 hook, shoulder press etc. Good luck!
