"Please find herewith the results of the SA National Championships 2010 held at Lake Umuzi Waterfront, Secunda, Mpumalanga.

This year saw a number of "old" armwrestlers return to the sport.  There were even a few upsets as sure fire medalists were pushed down the ranks by underdogs in their categories.

Full results and photos can be found on our website at
www.armwrestling.co.za

We will also be posting "Team South Africa", who will be representing us at the World Championships in December on the website soon.

World Armwrestling Amature Ranking

Matyushenko.com:
"Goal: to determine the first 10 World pullers in each WAF weight category on the right and left hand.

Basic principles of ranking calculation:

ranking is based on the official scores of World Championships WAF; ranking must reflect stability of pulling (that's why 3 years' period is analyzed); algorithm of ranking is the same for all sportsmen, no sympathy for any particular sportsmen; ranking updates after every official world championship; ranking considers only those pullers who have participated in the official world championship (with possible doping control) during the period of three years.

Criteria of getting points:

current year result - (1-25, 2-17, 3-9, 4-5, 5-3, 6-2); previous year result - (1-18, 2-10, 3-6, 4-4); year before the previous result - (1-11, 2-7, 3-5).

The author of ranking principles - Ivan Matyushenko

Made calculations - Alexey Korovushkin"

Fans of Nemiroff World Cup

Armpower.net: "Annual World Professionals' Armwrestling Cup - Nemiroff World Cup is one of the few events that is visited by fans from all around the world. Before we observed only the national armwrestling fans in the hall of struggles but last years the amount of the fans broaden out with the lovers from as well East as West border. The best supporting example are the fans of Denis Cyplenkov's form Russia. His fans have been putting on T-shirts with his image and taking the front rows and have supporting him till the end of the tournamnets for several years.

As of yet the organizers of the World Professionals' Armwrestling Cup gave over 100 invitations to people who will come to see this unusual sports event live and stay in the group of the strongest armwrestlers in the world.  Mazurenko Armwrestling Promotion Sp. z o.o from Gdynia (main organizer) assures entrance invitations and accomodation at occasional prizes in one of the best hotels on the sea-shore - Sopot Sheraton Hotel for every foreign guests.

Dzambolat Tsoriev to Nemiroff World

Cup 2010

jamshidosmanli-dzambolattsoriev-nemiroff05
Jamshid Osmanli vs. Dzambolat Tsoriev, Nemiroff 2005.

Armpower.net: "The real surprise at this year’s Nemiroff World Cup – Sopot 2010 may the start of a Russian competitor from Saint Petersburg - Dzambulat Corijev. This Russian competitor declared his start at up to 95kg class at Sopot World Armwrestling Professionals’ Cup as well for left as right hand. Although as he says himself: “my left hand is stronger than the right one, but I would like to repeat my success form 2005 when I ranked 1st on the podium for right hand.

We would like to remind everyone that  John Brzenk who weighted 104kg then fought at +95kg class. A year later – in 2006 John  started at up to 95kg class. Dzambulat Corijev did not manage to beat John in the direct confrontation and finally ranked second (John Brzenk was 1st of course).

“Then it was really taught to compete with John Brzenk. However this year breakthrough may occur as I feel great in left hand rivalry andof yet I can see no competition for me in my class” – said Dzambulat Corijev.

So after two years break the Russian competitor comes back to the armwrestling international arena in a new form. Unfortunately we could not have seen him at this year’s European Championships – Russia 2010  as he was preparing to Nemiroff World Cup. And as we consider his earlier good starts we may expect him to create some confusion in medal zone of up to 95kg class."

Visit Armpower.net and also read about the expected participations of Andrey Pushkar and Ferid Osmanli at this years Nemiroff...

Article about legendary armwrestler

Al Turner in Sports Illustrated

Jimmy Van Orden @ Northeastboard:
"The article was written by a super-heavyweight powerlifter named Terry Todd, who was world champion during the early 1970s. Todd, as I recall, also held a Ph.D. degree and was a prolific writer about weightlifting, arm wrestling and other strength sports. At one time, he worked for Bob Hoffman, owner of the York Barbell Club and coach of the U.S. Olympic weightlifting team for several decades.
The Sports Illustrated article focuses on Turner's career and delves into the history of arm wrestling."

"Arming Himself For The Fray" - October 09, 1978

"It was the middle of May, and out-side the Greater Scranton YMCA the air was a brutal combination of humidity, flatulence from the nearby Interstate and, of course, the effluvium of Greater Scranton itself. Inside the Y, though, the atmosphere was more bracing. It smelled of booze and balm, of barrooms and locker rooms—which was as it should have been upon the occasion of the second National American Arm Wrestling Association Championships. If ever a sport developed out of friendly, and not so friendly, barroom tests of strength, it is arm wrestling.

Halfway through this Saturday morning the meet was about to begin and the 156 male and 12 female contestants were warming up, each with his own words, each in his own way. The smaller men paced quickly, applying analgesic balm and chattering words of courage to themselves. The bigger men lounged around, applying analgesic balm and taking little sips of courage from their Thermos jugs. One of them, wearing a turban, was explaining to everyone within earshot that the perfect drink for a long day of arm wrestling was a blend of protein powder, soy flour, wheat germ, orange juice, fresh strawberries, almonds, bananas, raw eggs and beer.

The warming up continued. Spectators began to fill the auditorium, filing past the burly young ticket taker. The scene seemed remarkably decorous, all things considered, when the ticket taker stepped forward and barred the door. "Hold it, Pop," he said to a middle-aged man in horn-rimmed glasses. "It's two bucks to see the show." To which the middle-aged man replied, with a pleasant, though unblinking, smile, "It doesn't cost me a penny to see the show, Sonny. I am the show." And before the ticket taker had a chance to do or say anything for which he would without question have been sorry, someone shouted, "Hey, it's Al! It's the champ! Al Turner's here!" and the middle-aged gent was surrounded and bustled through the door into the auditorium by a group of laughing men, of every age and size, all trying to talk at once.

The subject of their joy and attention, Allen Turner, seems at first glance an unlikely hero for any group of strength athletes. Born on Jan. 20, 1928, his age alone should serve to disqualify him, and he doesn't radiate the kind of heavy-duty power one associates with arm wrestling. It is puzzling—until you notice the hands. Lord have mercy, what a pair of mitts! Great rough-cut mallets, they fan out from his wrists with tendons the size of guywires and display a set of digits that would look more at home on the feet of a Sasquatch."

The Greatest Armwrestlers in history

Tomasz Wisniowski @ Northeastboard:

"
On the blog Armrestling24h I collect the most important information about armwrestling. One of the chapters is called Hall of Fame. My knowledge does not allow me to create it, so on the forum northeastboard.com I asked for opinions people who are in this sport for years.

My post I titled
The Greatest Armwrestlers in History. One of the many who have given their opinions on this subject was Engin Terzi, who suggested to divide the Hall of Fame into:

- Best Ever, John Brzenk
- Best Ever Weight
- The Legends
- 50 Great Armwrestlers

Under the influence of opinions of big names, I changed the category of 50 Great Armwrestlers for The Greatest in the History and added one more Great Armwrestlers.

The first category Best Ever, John Brzenk was the easiest to prepare. The name suggests all.
The second - Best Ever Weight was divided into three weight categories
- Light Weight Ever (The Best Rustam Babayev)
- Middle Weight Ever (The Best John Brzenk)
- Super Heavyweight Ever (there were different view of who should be placed as the best: Richard Lupkas, Alexey Voevoda, Cleve Dean or Gary Goodridge), and again with help came Engin who said "only John can answer this question as he is the ONLY ARMWRESTLER who has pulled all of these guys".

I sent an email to John with the question: Who in his opinion is The Best Ever Super Heavyweight?

John Brzenk: "It wouldn’t be fair for me to even guess who would win if we could combine time and everyone could come in at their very best shape of their lives.
Still To many unknown variables.

Yes, the names mentioned are the Giants that I remember growing up.
Another guy that could be in this mix would be Scott Norton … during the Over The Top year 1986 ..he was scary strong.

Yes, Richard Lupkas was huge raw power …and it was very difficult to get any natural Armwrestling angles on him.
Gary Goodridge was very powerful in 96 97 … but was still limited by his build ..smaller hand that could be used against him.
Cleve Dean was around for a long time before my time. so it’s impossible for me to gauge his best ability. But later I discovered that his strength was in his HUGE hand size and that his arm once brought to wrist to wrist was beatable.
I don’t have any serious experience with Alexey… only pulling him in 2004 and not being in the greatest condition. But it would seem his huge strength is in his hand and rotation, and he maybe defeated by a BIG strong Norton or Lupkas if forced into a Hook.

The current best heavyweight in my mind isn’t a scary strong guy with a blast your arm off power …BUT he still may have the long build to control and strangle the life out of all the past best heavyweights.
Devon should be part of this list. If we are talking very best at one point in time.

These 6 guys are the ones that stick in my head through the years at being the Current best in the World at their peaks."

Thank you all for your help
Now time for a Legends."
